Understanding Prop 65

What is Prop 65

Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.  These chemicals can be in the products that Californians purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By requiring that this information be provided, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals.

Many of the chemicals listed in the Prop 65 warning are naturally occurring. While these chemicals are dangerous in large amounts, they may also exist in unavoidable trace amounts in natureWidespread in nature and in soil, low levels of lead are found in many foods and botanical products.  Small amounts of lead are found in many foods and supplements even though they are not added during the manufacturing process

Understanding Permissible Amounts

The amount of chemicals permitted under Prop 65 is significantly below the FDA limits for both pregnant women and all other adults.

Example: Permitted lead amounts

Prop 65: 0.5 mcg

FDA limit for pregnant women: 12.5 mcg

FDA limit for adults: 12.5 mcg
