Chinese Skullcap, Scutellaria baicalensis, also known as Huang-Qin, or Baikal Skullcap, is an herb in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Skullcap gets its name from its blue to purplish-pink flowers that have a shape resembling a medieval knight’s helmet. The Chinese have used the herb in traditional medicine for over 2000 years. In Ayurvedic medicine, Scutellaria is considered a cooling herb.

Bioactive flavonoid compounds are abundant in the roots of Scutellaria. Baicalin and wogonin have been the most studied. The primary pharmacological effects of these, and related flavonoids, include protection against free radical damage, inflammation modulating, neuroprotective, and immune system support. Studies have shown baicalin strengthening our body’s natural defenses against harmful invaders by interfering with the interactions of cell envelope proteins. Additional effects studied with promising results include increasing blood circulation, reducing the rate of mutation in cells, calming the nervous system, protecting chondrocytes, and memory-enhancing.

Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD, and Dr. Judy Mikovits, PhD, believe retroviruses may be the driving force behind symptoms of many chronic illnesses.
