Calenduala officinalis, also known as “pot marigold”, is an herb in the Asteraceae family. The plant should not be confused with common garden flower marigolds of the genus Tagetes. Calendula’s bright yellow to deep orange flower petals are the primary source of its beneficial bioactive compounds, although the leaves and stems are also used. There are many species of Calendula, but C. officinalis is the only one that has a long history of traditional and modern clinical use for its health benefits.
Calendula is most well-known for having inflammation modulating properties. Common preparations include teas, oil infusions, alcohol extractions and tinctures, as well as direct ingestion of flower petals. Calendula can be found in hundreds of cosmetic formulations such as skin creams, ointments, lotions, mouthwashes, gargles, shampoos, and hair conditioners. It has been proven to support burns, sunburns, rashes, and dry skin.* It has also been used to help calm muscle spasms and mental tension, reduce blood loss, soothe menstrual pains, and to support oral health and musculoskeletal injuries.* There are records from the Civil War mentioning it as being used to support liver function and heart health.*
The mechanisms for Calendula’s inflammation modulating actions have been attributed to a variety of factors, including inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines and Cox-2 and subsequent prostaglandin synthesis.* The herb contains potent bioactive compounds including flavonoids, terpenoids, coumarines, quinones, carotenoids, amino acids, and volatile oils. Many of these are powerful antioxidants that scavenge unstable free radicals and play key roles in Calendula’s health benefits.* Calendula also appears to increase the production of fibrinogen and stimulate angiogenesis.*
